The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is currently piloting the re-versioning of its web pages into 'learning routes', delivered as online learning programmes by further education colleges in the UK, as well as exploring 'tagging' its online output to accredited courses.
Currently the third most popular website in the UK and the only content driven website in the UK top 5 most visited sites, BBC Online is 'information rich'. This information is being re-packaged into learning programmes that lead directly to nationally recognised qualifications. Pilot BBC Online Learning Centres are using BBC web resources in combination with regional information and their own learner support mechanisms.
The BBC Online Learning project aims to assist the widening of participation in community and further education, using informal web based learning that encourages and motivates people to become active, lifelong learners.
The presentation will outline the progress of the pilot BBC Online Learning Project and the links made between 'WebWise' a recent BBC Internet awareness campaign and ICT qualifications. It will explore how UK FE colleges are meeting the challenges of online, distance learning, as well as how the media and broadcasters can encourage and motivate people to become active, lifelong learners.
